Why an Attitude of Gratitude?

It’s not just a catchy phrase, it is science! Yes, scientific studies have shown that having a regular gratitude practice can add years to your life, improve your immune system, improve your health, and will…well…bring you joy! And it is so easy to do.
First, find or buy something you can use as a journal. No need to go out and buy a fancy, expensive journal. You can use a cheap 3-ring binder or a pad of paper. Make it something that you can have easily accessible so you remember to do this exercise. Maybe keep it by your bedside, so you do this first thing before and after bed.

So what can you do?
Every morning write down three things for which you are grateful.
Every evening just before going to bed, write down three things for which you are grateful.
Write down different objects of gratitude. Don’t just write down “my dog” each time. What kinds of things should you write? Anything! How beautiful the sunrise is; that your spouse made dinner or cleaned up afterward; that you had time to watch your favorite show for once; that you were able to pay your bills this month; or just that you have a job. Make them different each day. Now whenever you feel down, sad, alone, etc., pull out that journal and remember the things you have to be grateful for.

What does the science say?
Scientific and peer-reviewed studies show that being grateful, increases the “feel good” hormones in your body: oxytocin, dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins. Versus when we are angry, or worried, we increase the fight-or-flight hormones: adrenaline, cortisol, and norepinephrine. The feel good hormones not only make you feel good, but they also allow your body to heal and stay healthy. Conversely the fight-or-flight hormones over time have been attributed to many of the chronic diseases today, like heart disease, digestive issues, high blood pressure, etc.

You can also establish a regular meditation practice.
Gratitude and meditation are your wonder drugs! The only side effect is inner joy!
